Locator-Retained Overdentures

Locator-retained overdentures are a secure and comfortable tooth replacement option for people who are missing most or all of their teeth. This treatment uses dental implants and special attachments called “Locators” to hold a removable denture firmly in place. It offers greater stability than a traditional denture while still allowing removal for cleaning.

What Are Locator-Retained Overdentures?

A locator-retained overdenture is one type of removable denture that snaps onto implants placed in the jawbone. Locator attachments are tiny connector pieces secured with the implants. The denture has matching inserts that link into these attachments. Thanks to this design, the denture remains in place while eating, speaking, and smiling.

Most patients need 2 to 4 implants in the lower jaw and sometimes 4 or more in the upper jaw. The exact number depends on bone strength and the treatment plan.

Benefits of Locator-Retained Overdentures

Improved stability compared to traditional dentures

Less slipping or movement while eating

Increased comfort

Better chewing ability

Easy removal for cleaning

Helps preserve jawbone by stimulating the bone through implants

This option is often recommended for patients who want better denture support without choosing a fully fixed bridge.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The process usually happens in stages. First, dental implants are placed into the jawbone. Healing time may take a few months while the implants bond with the bone. After healing, Locator attachments are connected to the implants. A custom denture is then adjusted to snap securely into place.

In some cases, temporary dentures may be worn during healing.

Post-Operative Care Instructions

Proper care is essential for long-term success.

After implant placement:

Mild swelling and soreness are typical for a few days.

Use ice packs on the outside of the face for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours.

Take prescribed or recommended medications as directed.

Eat soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, eggs, or soup.

Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods while healing.

Do not smoke, as it can slow healing.

Once the overdenture is attached:

Remove the denture daily for cleaning.

Brush the denture gently with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleanser.

Clean around the Locator attachments and implants using a soft toothbrush, floss, or special cleaning aids recommended by your dental provider.

Rinse your mouth after meals.

Keep all follow-up visits for adjustments and maintenance.

Locator inserts may wear out over time. If the denture feels loose, it may need new inserts.

With proper care and regular checkups, locator-retained overdentures can provide a secure, comfortable, and long-lasting solution for missing teeth.
