Post-Operative Care After Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline. It also smooths the tooth roots, helping your gums heal and reattach to your teeth. After treatment, it is normal to have mild soreness, swelling, or sensitivity. Proper care at home will help your gums heal faster and lower your risk of infection.

What to Expect in the First Few Hours

Your mouth will likely be numb for a few hours after your appointment. To avoid accidentally biting your tongue, lip, or cheek, please wait until the anesthetic wears off completely before you try to eat. Stick to cool liquids if you are thirsty, but avoid using a straw, as the suction can disturb the healing sites.

Managing Discomfort and Swelling

It is normal for your gums to feel a bit tender or “tight” once the numbness fades. You might also notice some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. This usually goes away within a few days. If you feel any discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as directed. To soothe the area, rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (about half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) three times a day.

Eating and Drinking

Eat soft foods that are easy to chew for the first 24 to 48 hours. Yogurt, pasta, eggs, or mashed potatoes are good options. Stay away from crunchy and spicy foods as well as foods with tiny seeds, such as poppy seeds and strawberries, as they can become lodged under the gum line.

Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Don’t stop brushing! Keeping your mouth clean is the best way to speed up healing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle circular motion. You may see a little bit of pink in the sink when you spit—this is normal for the first day or two. Be very gentle when flossing near the treated areas for the first week.

Things to Avoid

To give your gums the best chance to reattach to your teeth, avoid tobacco products for at least 72 hours. Smoking slows down blood flow and can significantly delay your healing.
